A Look at 2 Lutron Motorized Shades Options
Learn More About Lutron Serena and Triathlon Window Treatments!
If you’ve kept up with our blog for long, you know AV Design Consultants loves showing customers that motorized shades do more than most people give them credit for. Most people know that they raise and lower and sometimes block sunlight, but it might surprise them to learn that they can save clients substantially in energy bills, top off a room’s design, eliminate glare from screens and more.
While we’ve described their benefits at length, maybe you’ve moved past that stage. You’ve seen how Lutron works in stores or through our video tutorials and know that it’s the right solution for your Fort Smith, AR home’s lighting and shading needs. If this describes you, we venture to guess that you want to explore more details about popular offerings and assess their pros and cons. Today, we’ll discuss two popular Lutron shading options - Serena and Triathlon. Curious? Let’s dive in.

SERENA
In 1993, Lutron released its first shading offering, their base-model Serena. With one button, Serena’s “smart” microprocessor-controlled system could scroll through multiple shades, and early users marveled at the Quiet Electronic Drive technology. You could choose from four fabric options.
Though it still doesn’t come with the flashy features surrounding premium Lutron draperies like Triathlon, which we’ll discuss later, Serena looks much more sophisticated today. Customers can purchase the heat blocking/preserving honeycomb model or the stylish roller shade. Serena shades operate wirelessly through Lutron’s Caséta, which allows users to operate lights and shades simultaneously, along with all the other tools within the Caseta network. Also, you have many more fabric options to look at now, including a mix of opaque, sheer and translucent shades.
When might Serena be the right choice for your home? If you want to see how motorized shades fit your life or perhaps wish to start with one room (like a home theater) and upgrade later, Serena offers both standalone shading controls or the Caséta integration mentioned above. We also might recommend if you're not fitting any unusually sized or shaped windows or dealing with tricky orientations, like skylights.
TRIATHLON
The battery-operated cousin to Lutron’s flagship shading product, Sivoia QS, Sivoia QS Triathlon offers more flexibility and functionality than Serena, and fits into even the most extensive home projects, such as whole-home shading installations. Triathlon also nimbly handles more complicated window coverings by accommodating a wider range of sizes, shapes and tilt orientations. Clients appreciate the long battery life, quiet movement and broader fabric selections this upgraded model delivers.
Sivoia QS Triathlon shades are the only battery-powered shades available today that integrate seamlessly with not only Caséta, but also RA2 Select, RadioRA 2, or HomeWorks QS, allowing you more flexibility for more complex, or wired control systems.
